At first it's only an ear that turns, but at the snapping of branches the rest of the head comes up, turning briskly at the source. For a moment the dog stares, hind legs shuffling a bit at the sudden proximity the man has taken to him, and at the hand his ears fall back and seems to flinch.
When the man doesn't move further, just stands there, he whines slightly, ears perking up a bit at the muttering. After a while though the dog tilts its head and slowly reaches its head out, entire body shuffling oddly as it tries to turn in the odd space it's gotten itself into so that it can sniff properly at the hand.
Again he whines, nose lightly prodding at the offered hand, eyes looking up sadly at the ones peering down at him.
