To him, the near attempt at getting up on his hind legs looks like an excited little doggy hop, and he smiles, running his hand over the dog's head, still just the slightest bit damp but so much cleaner than before.
The nerves are understandable and he doesn't try to stop the paw from moving out of his grasp, until the cutters are in position. When it's all done, he smiles warmly up at the dog and leans forward to offer scratches and pets for comfort.
"Bet that feels better," he says and scratches down the sides of the dog's neck, then along its shoulders, giving it a good ruffling. "I'd give you a name if you did end up staying here. 's weird just thinking of you as 'dog'."
