Why hadn't the guy given him come kind of hints before now? Yes, he'd acknowledged how smart the dog was, but that had been a product of the assumption that he'd been really well trained. He leaves it at that though, and fishes in a drawer to find an ink pen and some scrap paper to be used for easier communication.
